If you've got Broadband - say goodbye to Ma Bell
I have had Vonage broadband phone service for three months now, and it has performed flawlessly since that time. I am very happy with the price ($25 for unlimited calling to the U.S. and Canada) and the quality of the connection. I was able to locate the main line into my house and swap the cable by the phone jack next to my computer so the whole house has Vonage phones, and I turned off my Verizon local phone service. The only time the phone has not worked was during Adelphia cable internet outages, but I had Vonage configured to forward calls to my cell phone in such an instance, and it worked perfectly...
The voice mail, *69, and other services that the phone companies charge extra for are free on Vonage, and you can see a complete record of calls to and from your phone number - very useful.
If you are travelling someplace that has a broadband connection (like many modern hotels) you can take your home phone with you! Very cool... If you have family in another state, you can set up a virtual number for a few extra bucks, and then they can call you without any toll charges. Also very cool.
My only complaint about Vonage is the fact that they have not enabled certain useful services like Anonymous Call Rejection. Hopefully they will be responsive to this glaring need.
