Great Nature Walk in NW Dallas area
6701 W Parker Rd
Park open 5am - 11pm. Gates are closed when park is closed.
Trail map: www.planoparks.org/_maps/ArborHills.pdf
Arbor Hills is basically a 200 acre nature preserve with walking paths all through it. They don't mow the grass. They don't trim the hedges. They leave it as it is prety much. The only maintenance done is a good sweep of the cement walking paths, and needed repairs of the man-made facilities.
The man-made facilities include a playground, about 4.4 miles of cement walking paths, 2.2 miles of off-road bike trails, three pavilions, restrooms, a natural biofilter, and a tower.
The tower towards the back of the park is quite excellent. From the top of it, you can see almost to the other end of the very vast area. And of course, far off in the distance, you can see the huge Prestonwood Baptist Church. The tower has quite a breathtaking view, and is a very nice spot to meditate.
While there are other people who walk the trails, many times it feels like a nice walk of solitude. During the winter months, the place doesn't look to pretty, however the beauty shines more in the spring and summer months. Most of the paths are in direct sunlight, so I would not advise a walk on a super hot summer day unless you brought some portable shade.
If you are feeling more adventurous there are many small dirt and stone paths running all throughout the park. These dirt paths cover a much larger area of the park than the standard cement paths, and the dirt paths give a better workout due to their erratic ups and downs. The dirt paths take you deep into the forest, providing a much nicer walk in a mostly shaded area. Throughout the dirt paths there was a sign that said "Drop Circle". I have no idea what this is, as I didn't see anything significant about the area, but I'm sure the sign was there for a reason. Anyway, I highly recommend the dirt paths over the cement path any day... well any day when it hasn't just rained.
